1. Tell us a bit about yourself
My name's Kat! I'm based in Manchester, UK and offer life and career coaching for women craving more passion and purpose in life. My work is dedicated to empowering women to put themselves first and achieve their goals - it's why I get out of bed in the morning! Alongside my coaching, I also host the Put Yourself First Podcast, interviewing inspiring women every Monday and sharing their expertise and guidance with my community. When I'm not working, I'm usually catching up with girlfriends over coffee and deep chats, or relaxing at home with my partner (we're first time buyers this year and total homebodies!)
2. What was your first job and how did you get it?
I was quite lucky to dive right into entrepreneurship as a makeup artist right out of college. However, I had no clients and no experience starting out, so whilst I worked for free to build my portfolio, I got a part-time job as a promotion girl in retail. I was that girl spraying perfume samples and trying to get you to buy it! As much as I hated it, I have retail to thank for making me a people person, confident communicator and relationship-focused.
3. How did you decide and get to your career today?
After 4 years as a bridal and occasion makeup artist, I knew it wasn't what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life. As rewarding as it is, I realized the key element I enjoyed was connecting with another woman and giving her the time and space she rarely gets. It is true that beauty services, whether it's makeup, hair, nails, whatever are like therapy sessions!
In school, I wanted to be a therapist but as I was never academic in Maths/Science, it wasn't the path for me. When I discovered coaching it felt like a true full circle, God moment! I hired a business coach to mentor me, worked for free (again) for a year to build up my experience/testimonials, read everything and anything I could to learn and dived in headfirst to make the transition.
4. What advice would you have given your younger self? Or what is the best career advice you have ever received?
Follow your gut and go after what truly feels right for you. Not what seems practical, or what your parents want you to do, or what you think you should do to earn money. Also, allow yourself to be seen and shout about your talents! Don't dim your light to fit in or make others feel comfortable.
5. In 5 years, where do you hope to be professionally and personally?
I would love to continue working one-on-one with women, but also evolve my work to include group coaching, in-person events/retreats and speaking engagements. My dream would be to have a TEDx talk. Personally, I'd also love to expand our family with fur babies and be able to travel and take extended time off for my loved ones, thanks to more passive income streams and growing a team.
