Spotlight Series: Meet Author and Career Coach Sherry Smalls

1. Tell us a bit about yourself

I am a mom of three handsome and precocious boys, married to my college sweetheart, a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and a devoted Baltimore Ravens fan! I am the co-author of Better Than Ever 30 Day Self Reflective Devotional and business partner for Awesome God Radio. I am the founder of Reinvented Destiny, LLC where I provided career coaching for people of all ages, as well as, business coaching for entrepreneurs and small business owners. I am passionate about workforce development and vocational training. My 9 to 5 is spent serving in Human Services specifically in the healthcare industry for adults who are underserved and/or vulnerable and with those who may have developmental/intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injury, or a dual diagnosis.

2. What was your first job and how did you get it?

My first job was working as a receptionist while in high school for a local community gym. I went through a city youth summer job program sponsored by the Mayor’s Office.

3. How did you decide and get to your career today?

Out of college, I worked for a school with children and young adults with visual and developmental impairments as a job coach.  My experience there was helping to train and provide career opportunities that would allow them to become more independent while also educating the community on how important access to the workforce is for all individuals. This led me to find creative ways to leverage a person’s skills and abilities while helping to create sustainable income based on what they were passionate about.

4. What advice would you have given your younger self? Or what is the best career advice you have ever received?

Do what makes you happy regardless of who understands, follow your intuition. No amount of money is worth your unhappiness.

5. In 5 years, where do you hope to be professionally and personally?

In five years I would like to devote my career 100% in my business. Personally, I want to have may more stamps on my passport with my family.
