1. Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a career coach, resume/LinkedIn profile writer, financial services expert and Business Talk Radio contributing presenter based in Harlem, New York, USA. Over the past decade, I have been working in both the financial sector and career coaching businesses. While in financial services I invest in tomorrow’s real estate leaders, in career coaching I help real hard-working people overcome the challenges and tribulations of job-hunting. I love giving people the tools they require to excel - I have written/re-written hundreds of resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, and bios. In addition, I help job seekers prepare for job interviews by running them through an actual job interview and providing comprehensive feedback.
2. What was your first job and how did you get it?
My very first job after college was a Property accountant at a Non-Profit Organization Abyssinian Development Corporation in Harlem which I have interned with for four summers during my college years as Finance Intern/Executive Assistant to CEO & CFO. I completed all AR/AP/Payroll functions/Calendar Management/organizing functions and meetings which I have learned during the internship. I was exposed to this company in High School after winning the Bank of America Student Leaders award during my Junior year of High School. I was 1 out of 5 Woman who won the award in the New York Tri-state area. My exposure to programs and ambition to being successful in the financial sector assisted me in receiving both the internship and full-time role directly after graduation.
3. How did you decide and get to your career today?
I have over 15 years of experience in resume writing/cover letter writing, Mock Interview Coaching, LinkedIn Profile editing and Career coaching in all fields. I developed a lot of my skills by attending many Networking Events, Job fairs, Events in college, Managed Mentor Programs and having several meetings with Job placement agencies. I was also very involved in the hiring process during my Full-time position as Managing Director of Operations at a Real Estate company and have obtained the knowledge that hiring managers are looking for in candidates of different fields. I have voluntarily completed resumes for many of my friends and have seen amazing results and more importantly, have seen the difference in positions/salary raises they received post her resume help. With that said, my eagerness to see others grow and be apart of that process is when I started ResumeWorks in September 2017.
4. What advice would you have given your younger self? Or what is the best career advice you have ever received?
I honestly would not change any of the advice I have given myself when I was young. I made a promise to myself that I would be the first in my family to attend and complete my Bachelors Degree and Masters which I have accomplished. I also pushed myself to be apart of programs and attended extra school hours to be more knowledgeable and make myself more competitive compared to students who have attended the prestigious high schools that I did not have the opportunity to attend.
The best career advice I have received was during my current role, my boss told me at any point you feel comfortable at work and not being challenged, that is for individuals who are not looking to really succeed in life. At any point, I feel like I am not being challenged or pushed to my best ability, I ask for more projects or find a role/project that I find fit for myself and try to implement it. I now think on a more business owner level versus day to day roles.
5. In 5 years, where do you hope to be professionally and personally?
In 5 years, I would hope to see Resumeworks having a mentorship program in place, possibly an annual event for both clients and potential clients. More importantly, I am hoping I can expand Resumeworks into a Job agency and hopefully have a plan in place for this to begin working on it as this is my ultimate long term goal for Resume works.
